The big lie is the idea people get tax "refunds."

Most people are wage earners with mandatory withholding. The government takes their money every paycheck. Not filing the tax return doesn't deprive the government of money, since in most cases it has it already.

If you owe, not filing costs:

The tax
5%/month failure to file penalty on the tax amount up to 25%
0.5%/month failure to pay penalty on the tax amount up to 25%
Interest on the whole thing compounded daily
