I started using a netbook a few weeks ago. The most important thing for is that is lasts a while on batteries otherwise it's no use.

I got this one and it works a treat using XP. It runs everything I need to. It lasts nearly all day without re charging.

I use a bluetooth connection to my mobile phone that has broadband. I get about 450 kbps in areas that are covered and about 150 kbps outside those areas. I could use a usb cable connection instead of bluetooth, which has a faster speed but often that's not convenient on the move. I like using a mouse and have a wireless optical mouse that I use when a hard surface is available.

I have a firewall and other security installed on it. If it's lost or stolen I have a plan. There is also a reward card stuck on the back of it.

/edit That kilobytes per second, not megabytes per second. It enough for most charts and streaming stuff. Even the slower 150 kbps is fast enough. It depends what the mobile phone provides (or dongle if you decide to use one) the netbook will handle whatever.

/edit2. On that very subject, the internet connection, it's the quality of the connection that is often the problem. How many timeouts do you get. My (supposedly SLOWER) mobile phone provides typically a much better quality connection then my frigging cable connection at home!!! Unbelievable. The cable company srews with the service . They say 20 Mbps but I get loads of timeouts. I may get a commercial deal instead of the crappy chopped retail. I need to do more then just torrent download porn or whatever normal users do. I guess they dont care about the quality of the connection -g-
