i never had any trouble with privacy and/or 'stationary target for attacks' in the 12 years of use of DSL with static address. And the internet was surfed 'vigorously' in the 1998-2001 era of early porn and Napster(research purposes you understand!) with no protection and no fear. The list of cookies got pretty interesting tho. Of course it was always done with a mac, and even today we pay our bills with USmail, and only order online with the likes of Amazon, Apple, Crucial, etc.

In my case, using my aging G4 as the gateway to a modern home wireless network makes no sense. In fact it seems, in this day and age, the static IP only makes sense if you want to become a server with not only an ISP but also a DNS domain name.
It's time to move past it... will probably go to cable with the Airport extreme as the internet gateway. Someone on this thread mentioned an ideal gateway/router that would field not only Comcast type cable protocol, but also wireless protocols from ATT, Verizon , Sprint, etc. Technically i bet it's easy, politically, i bet it's impossible. because of difficulties with content ownership. |
