You sure do defend the industry and the status quo. You realize it's not sustainable, right?

As to defending the status quo, we have the best health care system in the world. Period. So the status quo has SOME good characteristics and you want to be very careful when making changes to it.

The lion's share of the problem is with the government run programs, MC/MA. Private enterprise can generally take care of itself. If they believe fraud is a huge problem they'll act to stop it. Government has shown itself unable to do so time and again.

There are lots of things that can be done to improve the situation, but no one item would improve the situation any more than fixing Medicare Advantage and using that as the basis to privatize both Medicare and Medicaid. Not that you could do that politically, but it would be an important step in the right direction.

One thing is certain. If there is $x in fraud at the private level, there is $x*y (y>1) in fraud in the government programs. This is because of an axiom that has proven true for decades -- any job that both government and private enterprise can do will be done better by private enterprise. It is a simple fact of life. Contrast UPS/FedEx with the Post Office. Contrast Haliburton providing food service for the military versus the military doing it itself. Or anything else you want to compare. If it CAN be done privately, it will be done BETTER, privately.
