I haven't checked out the data sheet on the part yet, but I can tell you that it is quite significant if it does what they say it does. Cellular phones & pagers use low-dropout linear regulators because they're cheap but also because they don't generate noise that mucks up the wireless section of the product.

Switching power supplies are much more efficient than LDO's and will contribute substantially to battery life if they can be used. The more wireless penetrates markets outside of pagers/phones (such as Windows CE devices, which require more power and thus need switchers to begin with), devices like this may be not just nice but Necessary to enable convergence of computers with wireless.

I wouldn't necessarily expect this product itself to quickly become 10% of sales or anything, but it does show that LT has some of the best engineers out there. Jim Williams (quoted in article) is certainly one of the smartest guys in Silicon Valley.
