It seems you're shifting your argument aren't you? Earlier, weren't you arguing one low-range vehicle plus a "regular" vehicle would be enough for a family. Now you are talking about extended range vehicles instead of low-range ones.

the VOLT is just such a car. It allows you to go 40 miles on one charge, but then another 600 miles when the engine kicks in when the battery is low. That's a total of around 640 miles ...

Actually, the GM-Volt site says the total range of the Volt will be 400 miles total - equivalent to regular cars on the road now. The battery will run you 40 miles on its charge, then the gasoline engine begins running as a generator to provide charge to the electic motor. Let's resist the urge to over-hype things.
