"A tax on high-end health care plans provided by employers might have actually had an impact on total health care spending....instead we get the laughably named surtax."

The plan as presented continues the lie that the welfare state can be had for free by the masses. With the welfare state for free how could it ever result in a lost election. It will be so easy to trash any politician who opposes the welfare state for free. Where it will show up is in a low or no growth economy with no jobs for all the newly educated - think Egypt - and huge deficits as the rosy scenarios do not come true. At this point it will require a thoughtful electorate to figure out the problem - and that ain't going to happen!

The ultimate solution will be a radical reduction in military expenditures likely caused by a Katrina like market event that will be blamed on Bush.

We need a broad based tax increase so everyone has some skin in the game and insane deficits are radically closed to avoid a disaster.
