Well, I wasn't at the Marine House party in Zagreb where the most notorious incident I ever heard of happened; the youngest Marine in the detachment drank too much and decided to drive his local girlfriend home in the detachment's brand new armored vehicle. Marines aren't allowed to drive in countries where they are guards, and certainly not blind drunk. This poor guy dropped off his girl, then headed down a winding street that passed right by the Croatian president's lavish residence (one of Tito's homes in the old days). He managed to jump a curb, go airborne and centerpunch a huge tree with the vehicle, totaling it completely. Through some divine intervention, he was knocked clear and survived with bruises. But his future was a stint in the brig and a bad discharge, no doubt. Shame, he was a nice kid. That was the only incident like that I ever witnessed at several embassies. The Marines chosen for guard duty are always among the best they have, and they do their duty to that standard.
