You're right, the Republican party has a great history on civil rights.

It was Lincoln who ended slavery while the South was politically dominated by white supremacist racists.

But that all began to change when white southerner Democrat LBJ pushed for and signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

The Democrats lost their hold on the South as the white supremacists fled the party, first as independents, like the Dixiecrats and then finally the ended up in the Republican party.

In the irony of all ironies, the Republican party is now the party of white southern racists while the Democratic party is the party of minorities and civil rights...
