It has been able to handle 2.5 billion shares in volume and now they are going to
increasing it to 3.5 billion.

Source of Info: my econ professor, Dr. W. Freund, formerly a high ranking executive at
the NYSE.

Joe,

I recently visited the NYSE. One year ago. The person giving the tour indicated 1 billion shares was top compacity for the new computers they had installed. Trade confirmations on market orders were still showing up at some trading houses as late as 5 PM ET. I really do not know which figure is accurate. I assumed the tour person would have known. They planned on the present upgrade to last until the year 2005. That is all I know.

Glenn

PS The NYSE never handled more than 800 million shares prior to today. That is on their web page. I do not know where your Econ professor got his/her information
