(AP:INDIANAPOLIS) The city is eligible to receive $8 million in energy efficiency and conservation block grants from the federal stimulus program.

Indianapolis officials have submitted eight projects to the U.S. Department of Energy for funding consideration. A total of 450 counties are eligible for the grants.

The largest expenditure is $3.3 million for construction of 17 miles of new bike trails, followed by $2.5 million to retrofit traffic lights at 730 of the city's 1,100 intersections with high-efficiency light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Other projects include retrofitting street lights with LEDs, energy efficiency improvements at the City County Building, and installation of green roofs and solar panels at Indy Parks facilities.
