GENERAL INSTRUMENT'S NEXTLEVEL BROADBAND NETWORKS GROUP TO PROVIDE DIGITAL CABLE TELEVISION SYSTEMS TO TELEWEST, BELL CABLEMEDIA AND NYNEX CABLECOMMS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

General Instrument Corporation has announced that its NextLevel Broadband Networks Group has been selected by the three largest cable operators in the United Kingdom, Telewest Communications plc (Telewest), Bell Cablemedia plc (including Videotron Holdings plc) (Bell Cablemedia) and NYNEX CableComms Group (NYNEX CableComms), to provide digital cable set-tops.

General Instrument expects to supply an integrated platform for digital cable services to homes throughout the UK.

"We are delighted to receive this award," said Richard S. Friedland, Chairman and CEO of General Instrument. "This is a major customer commitment outside North America for our digital cable technology, and it represents our first cable win in the international DVB standards environment. Further, we are pleased that Telewest, Bell Cablemedia and NYNEX CableComms selected our conditional access technology, which is the best in the world."

Like GI's digital set-top terminals for the North American market, which began commercial deployment last year, the company's products for the UK will enable system operators to meet increasing consumer demand for enhanced picture and sound quality, expanded channel counts and the ever-evolving selection of interactive services.

GI's digital system is a platform that enables operators to offer a range of interactive services, including impulse pay-per-view, video-on-demand and high speed Internet access and web browsing.

System integration and testing for the UK platform will all be conducted at GI's European headquarters, based in Reading, England.

To date, GI has manufactured more than 200,000 of its DCT-1000 digital cable set-tops for the North American market, and has shipped 20 digital headends to customers, enabling them to reach some 3 million homes. It has customer commitments for some 4 million set-tops over the next few years.

Upon completion this summer of its recently announced strategic restructuring, General Instrument Corporation will divide into three separate public companies that are leaders in distinct global growth markets. NextLevel Systems, Inc., comprised of the Broadband Networks Group, based in Hatboro, PA, the Satellite Data Networks Group, based in San Diego, CA and GI's NextLevel Communications subsidiary, based in Rohnert Park, CA will emerge as a leading worldwide supplier of systems and components for high performance networks delivering video, voice and Internet/data services. CommScope, Inc. is the world's largest manufacturer of coaxial cable and a leading supplier of high-performance electronic cables. General Semiconductor, Inc. (currently Power Semiconductor) is a world leader In the sale of discrete semiconductors.
