That video is a bit sensational. A clearcut is not forever. The largest problem is that it takes about 50 years for the forest to open up enough to allow animals to find protection from the snow in the winter.

The Tongass naturally reseeds itself very fast becasue of the incessant rain. You can clear cut an area and it will be covered by vegetation within a few years. First alder (they grow one to two feet a year) and a few other trees like that, while the spruce will seed zillions of small trees so thick you cannot walk throught them (this is a problem for the animlas in winter).

As long as you do not poisen the Tongass it will come back quickly. The massive amount of seeds spread each year is so vast we have to wash our cars they are covered in it. And often you will so old trucks with spruce growing in th bed.

In fact the Tongass forest has the most bio mass per acre of any forest in the world. It is the huge amounts of rain we received.
