The area described has steep slopes and is rain forest. Without very careful planning the topsoil washes out when an area of old timber is cut. Reclamation after that is sometimes impossible. Even with careful planning to avoid excessive erosion you have to plant seedlings immediately or the ground cover and brush will choke the forest floor, prohibiting tree growth from seeds. Those are just the basics that any dumb dumb should know. Lumber and forest management is a zillian times more complicated than that. What is for certain is that you can't just clear cut a place like that and wait around until a new forest pops up in its place and expect the renewal to be anything but a lack of trees.
