To be much more accurate No, because my comment was 100% accurate. A lot of the WWII debt was paid down, then the national government went on a long term spending/debt spree. If you really care about the partisan aspect the spending/debt spree was mostly with Republican presidents and Democratic congresses. The debt only didn't increase when we had a Democratic president with a Republican congress (and other important and unusual circumstances like the "peace dividend", and then the tech bubble.
