Stiglitz's point seems to be that poor countries will opt for total abject poverty because "capitalism and democracy don't work".

That might be so. Plenty of people are gloating "see, capitalism doesn't work", but they are wrong and it wasn't capitalism that didn't work.

I have capital and was all set to bid for Fannie, Freddie, GS, AIG and you could throw in GM too because it would be fun to own a big car company. But the anti-capitalists in government headed me off at the pass and threw tax payer loot at their buddies to keep them in the manner to which they had become accustomed.
