If you say so I won't argue with that (but having some ACTUAL HARD NUMBERS and DATES attached to that assertion would be very helpful to the conversation.)

So we could know WHEN 'spending' (measured as percentage of GNP, same yardstick as we are measuring national debt against...) went up, and then perhaps get at the exact COMPOSITION of the 'increase'. (Social programs begun in the 'sixties? Star Wars? etc.)

However, point of order here... it need not matter so much if spending 'increased' --- so long as GNP increased even more.

Because, we have already seen that that is the key to reducing national debt: growing GNP (which grows federal revenues) faster then you are growing federal spending / borrowing.
