"Why are we in Afghanistan, and even sending more and more troops? The Afghan people are lazy, they let Americans do the fighting against Taliban, and then they can grow more poppies."

Ostensibly, because without us there the Taliban would have the country under their control (like they did previously) and be training more mad bombers to attack us and our interests.
