Regarding

As you are showing with your mindless following…
I've always considered ignorant vicious gangs and mobs to be one of life's common evils, so when I see yet another such mob forming, I'm happy to call them what they are. If they don't like being considered stupid, vicious etc , then too bad for them. They can go to Hell.
repeating a falsehood 91,000 times doesn't make it true

What do we make of several sources suggesting that same thing? Is it a conspiracy, or smear campaign, or just the reckless mob? If 91,000 people state that the US is within the Northern Hemisphere, that in and of itself, doesn’t make it true. I think that’s true. What makes that true, Maurice? I hope someone from another hemisphere might be able to determine if that was true or not, and that he in his wisdom, might tell us.

<Alcoholics might blame the brewery, drug users blame their suppliers…>

The other side of this coin is to blame the victim. Hey, I just sell cheap booze to “stupid” folks. I may have sold some vodka with a little lighter fluid in it, but I can’t stop very boozer from slugging down bad brew, can I? It’s his damn own fault for being that desperate, right? He can go to Hell for all I care; too bad for him. There’s more like him down the street. Where have I’ve seen this attitude before?

I agree with philv’s post (52516) and the most relevant section (to me) entitled “Flawed Ideology Enables Systemic Failure.” I believe in evolution, but I also believe that the Bible tries to teach us that we do not self-regulate very well. Specifically, I believe what was stated in aforementioned post that “rational self interest rapidly turned into irrational greed.” This greed is typically mixed with pride or hubris and comes before an economic crash and personal misfortunes.

I would like to consider a scenario of a public street with stop signs, stop lights and speed limits which are enforced from time to time by regulators (cops). On occasion, a pedestrian dies crossing the street, or maybe two cars collide, killing the occupants. So in this example, on average there are “only” two deaths per year in this particular area.

Now someone decides that they want to move a little faster through these streets, and they ask the city council to remove the stop signs, stop lights and speed limits, and ask for a “lighter touch” on the enforcement of reckless driving, since it’s so hard to define. Now there happens to be a councilman that believes that the rational self-interest of drivers not to injure themselves will allow traffic to self-regulate the speed for different weather conditions or traffic density. At first, the system works well as people adapt to the new rules, and as they become more comfortable at higher speeds, everyone congratulates themselves for being the smartest guys in the room. “Just look at how fast the traffic is now moving in the summer of our expanding wealth,” they exclaim.

Now autumn comes and a few more deaths occur as driving conditions degrade. Oh well, we expected a few more deaths, but overall we are still moving traffic at more than 300% efficiency, so we’ll accept some losses, but keep a eye on things. And now, winter approaches with icy roads and poor visibility increases the deaths by a factor of 10. People scratch their heads, and wonder if something might be going on here. Now the occasional death turns to regular fatalities as cars pile upon cars (or, in real life, banks fail one after another). Let’s go back a figure out how all this started. Oh yes, that’s right, we have a guy who has been knighted (KBE), who some believe is G-d’s gift to the world economy, and this guy thought that an unregulated traffic system would be good for the economy. People were supposed to be getting where and what the wanted faster than ever before. This should be good right?!

Maybe Maurice will figure out the flaw for us.
