single-payer health care system

People forget that Medicare is NOT a single payer system. It is farmed out to local "carriers" - who are traditional health insurance companies. Those carriers receive funding, and then proceed to make payments and generally run all of Medicare's local operations. It is my understanding that when people discuss the costs of running Medicare they generally neglect the costs incurred by those local carriers.

Perhaps, before they talk about any single payer system they should try centralizing Medicare - and see how that works. As of now, our government has just about zero experience in administering (centrally) a large health care system.
