One of the interesting things about this Brooks' column is this almost ubiquitous claim from commentators and politicians that they speak for America.

It’s not that interesting to watch the Democrats lose touch with America.

Palin claims to speak for "real" Americans. No doubt, we could go through any number of columnists, politicians, etc., to note how often and in what context, they make such claims.

Not a terribly interesting exercise. But we should take such claims with more than a pinch of salt.

It's also strange to see that much hyperbole in a Brooks column. I agree with someone else.
