That leaves matters in the hands of the Blue Dog Democrats. These brave moderates are trying to restrain the fiscal explosion. But moderates inherently lack seniority (they are from swing districts). They are usually bought off by leadership at the end of the day.

Interesting Brooks piece. Considering myself a blue dog and from a swing state (tho not swing district), I think Brooks speaks to the truth in these statements. Blue Dogs are also hampered because they represent districts in many of the smaller midwest and/or southern states and thus are viewed with intellectual contempt by other factions in the party.

As for myself, the hope I felt when O was elected has been replaced by fear of that same administration. This isn't saying I regret my vote, just that I think the downward spiral that began with the Bushies is going to have to run its course. Any problems "solved" by this administration will likely leave different and maybe bigger problems in its stead.

One example. Because of regional cost of living disparities, it's pretty clear that bringing health insurance/healthcare to all the uninsured will result in higher health insurance costs to people living in states like mine. What then for people here living on the edge? Do they turn to other social services for relief?

It's all a bunch of cost-shifting inside a giant game of whack-a-mole, I fear. Solve a problem in one part of the country and it may bring a new problem to another part. Very discouraging.
