It was several years ago that I read the book, maybe even more than a decade. Unlike you, I read about a book a week, have been doing so for forty years, and can't remember every detail. UC moved the plant there to avoid US regulations on producing insecticide, which are safe and strict.
The Indian locals were easily bribed to ignore even their weak regulations. A tragic story of American corporate greed, which eventually ended the greedy corporation, after killing hundreds of Indians. Unrestrained capitalism at it's very worst.
