I think it would actually be much more convenient for every but teachers. Parents who work outside of school employment have a hard time with those long breaks. Most of the people I know- who aren't teachers- would like year round school. I just never thought it was a super important issue, because I didn't realize the losses over summer were so big. I think you over estimate most people's love for a long vacation. Most people who have kids know that kids get bored and in to trouble if they aren't somewhat scheduled over the long break- so I think parents would really find shorter breaks greatly helpful. I could be wrong, but the districts that have gone to year round seem to be happy with it- and it usually is a district choice, and the whole district switches at once. It would be an administrative nightmare to have two systems going in the same district.
