When I moved there, I was surprised how disconnected people were in their neighborhoods.

Florida is like that also. When we moved here we made a point to have some parties and invite the entire hood... then organized some 'block parties' (actually down here cul-de-sac parties). An import from the north but did the trick... everybody knows each other and socializes.

I did the same in LA. My neighborhood had crime problems but neighbors were pretty removed from each other. Set up a watch program where when we saw trouble in one house, we were all alerted and would show up to surround the house. We also got the city to install old fashioned street lamps [it was an older neighborhood]. We also planted an open strip of land across from the houses with trees. It was like pulling teeth but the neighborhood learn to do things together.
