I wrote this letter to Harry Alford today:

Hello Mr. Alford,
25 years ago I went to El Camino College in Torrance California. In one of my English Literature classes we studied the book "Light in August" by William Faulkner. My teacher was a black man named Dr James and he was possibly the best teacher I ever had.

In studying "Light in August" he focused on the race relations and racial tensions depicted in the book. One character we focused on was a white woman named Joanna Burden. On the surface she seemed very sympathetic to black causes to the point of being on the boards of black colleges in the south. What Dr. James then focused on was that the character of Joanna Burden pitied the black men she was supposedly trying to help. She felt that they needed her help just to survive. It was a real eye opener to see that someone who presents themselves as supporting blacks can really have the worst kind of insipid racism. That is the racism that is patronizing and belittling.

When I saw the exchange between you and Barbara Boxer, I immediately thought of the Joanna Burden character in "Light in August". She came prepared to put you in your place with the NAACP report. I read her words as "this is what right thinking black folk think, toe the line!". She further showed her condescension and racism when she said "he would be proud, I'm sure, that I am quoting him", speaking, I assume, of the author of the NAACP report.

Barbara Boxer came to that meeting prepared to put you in place with the NAACP report. Since she didn't wait to be backed into a corner to have that report ready, it is clear that her racism was premeditated. I applaud you for standing up to this insipid form of racism.

Best,
Grub 69k
