It's sad that we can only recall two generations before us and few families keep records any more. My cousin that spent some 20 years researching the Adams name did a wonderful job. The result was a book about the size of a city telephone book. She took pictures of grave sites, was bitten by a rattle snake at one of the very old grave yards, made copies of articles from 100 year old newspapers and interviews with the oldest members of the family. My father gave her enough for several pages. He could remember dates, names, even the dogs he owned. Ironically, when he died he had chronic dementia and couldn't remember what he just ate for lunch. I made sure both my kids got a copy of that book.
