The problems with the discount brokers weren't just US based today. In Canada most (if not all) of the discount houses run through the big banks. I trade online through the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and have never had a problem prior to today. However, this morning it was no dice...the service was jammed!

However, I think it is important to realize that yesterday was a point record drop, and today a point record gain. These were historical milestones and now the brokerage houses have a benchmark that their systems must be able to keep up to. With the heavy competition in the states these houses endure you can bet the service will be upgraded immediately or they risk going out of business. I just wish the Canadian discount brokerage houses faced as much competition. If anyone knows of any deeper discount houses than the major banks in Canada I'd love to hear. I feel I'm still paying far too much even with our discount houses.
