The difference as I see it is that Charter schools provide a larger return for tax payer dollars than the public schools as we know it today.

I'm something of a fan of charter schools when they are constructed to give teachers more authority over the structure of the school. That was the case in NYC in the 80s and 90s; not certain now. But a blanket statement that they "do better" isn't true. Studies suggest there is basically no difference between comparable charter schools and public schools.
