speaking of self sufficiency. i ran into a guy today whose kid is a member of 4-h.
in six weeks, you can raise a chick (chicken) to a bird netting after feathers, head, and guts, and 18 pound roaster.
along the way, you get fresh eggs.
they raise 75 at a time. they take them down to a vietnamese butcher. all the birds are hung by their feet. the woman wears a glove with a knife on the side of it. she runs down the line of birds, and bam, all the heads are off. then she puts the birds in some spinning machine, and bam, all the feathers are off. 50 cents each for the kill, guts and feathers.
another 75 cents-1.00 for cutting into parts, or deboning.
loads it all up into your ice chests with ice.

so i have the 4-h club manual now for raising roaster/broilers.
will find the lady.
will plan the coop and the yard.
will do 15 birds at a time.
buy chest freezer.

does pigs too, but......... that's another story.
i have an invite to go up and see their place about 45 minutes from here.
