Here's a response from that site I quoted.

I know for a fact this is not true. I have three kids and have asked several doctors about the possibility of getting their tonsils out, as I had major problems with tonsillitis as an adult and would like to save them that pain. None of the three pediatricians I have spoken to would consider taking the tonsils out unless there's documentation of a severe problem. My current pediatrician says there needs to be 6 documented cases of strep throat in a year before she'll take them out. So doctors are NOT taking out tonsils unnecessarily--in fact, it's the complete opposite.
