Simple tests can detect Downs syndrome to a 99% likelihood in the first trimester making it a simple matter to choose abortion at an extremely early stage if that is what the parents desire. The fact that this becomes an issue after 20 weeks would argue that there is already a serious health issue for the mother. In any event it is between the mother and her health care provider. The medical specialist will discuss the health of both the fetus and the mother and a decision will be made that is most beneficial with regard to all health concerns.
