Actually survival rate means the percentage of people with the disease who are still living 5 years after diagnosis and treatment. In the extreme a person could die at 5 years 1 month and still be considered a survivor.

Mortality rate might be a more meaningful number this debate... In that regard there are lots of countries with a lower cancer mortality rate than the US... Here's a chart page from a lengthy paper of cancer stats..... In the text, the authors are skeptical about Thailands consistently low results...
