(It's a standard sales tax though so it's assessed on all of the medical marijuana purchases at the point of sale, in all of Oakland's licensed dispensaries.) Given the remarkably high level of public support though (even for a mail-in ballot where mostly only interested people participate it's still remarkably high...) nearly 80% approval for a TAX of all things... I expect that something very similar will be but on a California State referendum fairly soon. (I reckon they've got enough budget problems right now, and people ASKING to pay a tax might be hard for the revenue department to oppose....)
