The arrest was made even after the officer established that Gates was the legal resident of that house. When the police officer proceeded to enquire who the other people in the house(probably a black taxi driver)were and Gates refused to answer and instead may have shot back profanely, the officer then decided to charge Gates with disorderly conduct and lured him onto the porch so that he could arrest him without incident.

Let us assume that Prof. Gates hurled profanities as the officer claims. But I wonder if this would have gone that far if the police officer had apologized to Gates after establishing that Gates was the occupant/resident and left the scene immediately, no matter what. Instead, it seems to me that the officers ego played a role here.

It is also interesting to see that in the recently concluded press conference by the Cambridge police, there were no representatives from the multi-cultural police officers association.

The police folks on the podium during the press conference totally missed the President's point during the President's press conference. He clearly stated that there has been significant progress on the racial issue "or else I wouldn't be standing here today." What he also said, and the bigots deliberately ignore, is that there is still more work to be done on the race issue.

Let us not forget the tears rolling down the eyes of African-Americans and the glow of pride in the eyes of White folks when on the night of November 2008 Obama delivered his victory speech in Chicago. It is time to squelch the remnants of racial bigotry in this country.
