The presence of unions is not only a long term presence in the American economy, it's been, long term, quite beneficial. One of the benefits is to provide better healed consumer for that economy than would otherwise be the case. And makes your business friends more money. The quote from Henry Ford is always dropped into a conversation at this point.

Unions are like any large institution. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Our labor laws allow monopoly unions - eg a single UAW negotiated with three auto companies - one at a time to extort unsupportable contracts. The result was inevitable. The same is coming for public employee unions whose retirement plans are unsupportable.

My guess is we just differ here. I think the long term is much more important than the short term. We appear to differ at the most basic level, whether global warming is a sufficient danger that it needs to be addressed. I don't see us getting into that conversation. But it's at the root of our disagreement.

Alternate energy supplies should supplant current supplies as they become available. To simply destroy current supplies without knowing replacements are available is a huge policy mistake. CO2 reduction could be a result of alternate energy - not a goal of alternate energy. To implement Cap and Trade in a world that does not is beyond destructive.

I see your moral outrage; I fail to see any serious danger to the health of the republic.

Legal certainty is a key to business law. As law becomes politicized the whole system is harmed.

FWIW - this will all play out over the next years. Years 2009 and 2010 will benefit from a flood of money. The real answers will show in the out years.
