He obviously has no personal confidence. His entire sense of belonging--of family, friends, community is indubitably tied to doing God's work. No doubt he has always been judged in this regard by the church hierarchy beginning with his family and since before his own little knee pants and his first childhood prayer book at the age of probably about three.

Unlike strong and intellectual thinkers who are able to leave the Christian Church after study, observation, and thoughtful exploration...greg or e would scarcely be able to stand on his own pins if he were unable to DO GOD'S WORK--in the way that his Church Commanders have taught him to do. His entire sense of ego/being/belonging/ is contained in that tiny chrysalis crucible of caterpillar faith. You gotta feel a little sorry for him...
