I also think we will have to see a radical decrease in military spending.

A radical decrease in military spending will not solve the deficit problem since the deficit is greater than all the Pentagon's spending.

When I was a kid, defense spending was 70% of the Federal budget. Now it is about 20% of the budget. The decrease in the relative size of defense spending is the only reason the Feds have been able to increase the social spending so much without huge tax increases.

We need to remind people that one reason we got in WWII was that our military was weak and our enemies attacked confident we could not defeat them. It took two years after Pearl Harbor to build a strong military. We had the two years due to our geographic isolation by the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Technology has eliminated our geographic isolation. The next war will be come as you are, and could easily be decided in one year or less.
