It's nice when the citizenry are rested and relaxed enough to deal with the ego issues of cops, but it isn't a duty a society should place on a homeowner, or anyone else who is lawfully going about their business. We do not live in a police state, and the police work for us. Part of their job is seeing people at their worst- people who are tired, injured, or people who are mentally ill. If the police can't handle a tired, elderly black man, I'm not sure how well trained they are. I'm willing to believe it might have just been a bad day for both men- but if the police department defends this kind of episode as their best practices, you have to say "That's not very good." I mean what would they do with some poor mentally ill person? Black or white, you have to wonder if that person will end up dead. And no one cares about the poor when they are victims. A big part of this case is that Gates was somebody, The nobodies just end up being silently screwed, for the most part.
