John McCain was born in the Panama Canal where his father was serving. I couldn't find out if the birth was on base - or in town.

I've always thought that if an American woman gave birth to child, the child is automatically an American citizen, no matter where the birth takes place. There are all kinds of situations - giving birth on a plane over the Atlantic - giving birth while on vacation in Mexico. I don't know what the law is.

Even if she gave birth in Kenya, wouldn't he be an American citizen because his mother is American? I've heard there are other questions about this, but I don't know the answers.
