Traditionally, it is a "warning sign" and short lived. The number of years that LLTC and MXIM have enjoyed these margins and the rapid sales growth with which these margin have come, indicate that competitve entry is much more difficult than for most markets. Also, a larger competitor will probably publicly announce a decision to compete in this market. (Admonitus admunitus - forewarned is forearmed).
