We have similar tastes, I think...One of the reasons I am so fascinated by Pioneer Women of the 1800's is that they were like the women of the 1600's who came here mostly from Europe, where they had at least basic needs met. Here in this country, the women had beautiful scenery, but nothing else provided to them... Both they and the women of the 19th century had to reinvent the wheel, be the miller of their grain, after it was raised; make their own yarn and weave their own materials after the sheep were raised; took care of their children without any of today's modern conveniences (disposable diapers, baby food in jars, cute little baby blankets, and yes, even darling little beds)....we know more about what the men did to tame the country and provide for their families, but still not enough to know what contributions the women made...
I do public speaking on some of these early women, and always have to wonder how they accomplished what they did. |
