Along with rare and undiscovered animal species, Laos is a really stimulating country to visit Lonely Planet style. History, cultural anthropology, geology, art, crafts, good food, great people...... so much more. Just go and be kind to these warm forgiving people who we bombed the sh&t out of during the Viet Nam war years. leave yourself at least 3 weeks, or more.

Cheap flights to Laos come from the main SE Asia hub in Bangkok, or bus to the border and cross the "Friendship Bridge" near the capital Vientiane, or take the slow boat down the Mekong.

Along with Wrigley Field, Laos along with Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar) should be on your bucket lists. If you are over 50 years old, these country's histories are bound tightly with the United States in our lifetimes.

This is not like an Princess Cruise or a trip to Italy, if that is your bent, but its amazing, relatively safe travel.
