Nissan has teamed up with EnerDel, a lithium-ion battery manufacturer, to research a new generation of electrical conductive material. The new material is designed to provide superior performance for hybrid and electric vehicle batteries at a reduced cost. EnerDel owns the only current high-volume manufacturing plant for large format lithium-ion cells in the U.S.

Specifically, Nissan and EnerDel will be looking at a new form of electrolyte - the liquid that provides the conductive properties between battery electrodes. The two companies will co-fund research on the new electrolyte at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago.

"This is an opportunity to make a major new contribution to the future of electric drive in the U.S. and to forge a closer relationship with a major global car maker," said EnderDel COO Naoki Ota.

Recently, Nissan debuted a new electric vehicle prototype in its native Japan, based on the Versa compact hatchback. In our report, Nissan also said it was looking at bringing more hybrids to market in the U.S. as a bridge to full electric vehicles, though its focus is still on full electric cars. Nissan recently was awarded $1.6 billion by the U.S. government to develop more fuel-efficient vehicles. Nissan plans to use the funds to build a lithium-ion battery factory in Tennessee.
