Have you adopted Obama's overly cynical view of the medical community?

I haven't adopted Obama's anything. Does he have a cynical view? I have my own cynical view of the medical system. I haven't been paying attention to his.

I am trying to practice wellness in a medical system that is into disease management. That's enough to make me a cynic.

Begin rant.

I had a transaction with my primary care doctor just the other day where I went to get authorization for annual blood tests. I had made really drastic changes in my lifestyle just over a year ago and sought feedback on how they have affected my risk factors. As an experienced analyst and system designer, I know to get feedback after a new system has been in place for a while. That's how one knows if one is on the right or wrong track. Like, duh. So I give her a list of blood tests that hadn't been done for a year or longer and she asks me for a reason for each. Says she can't order the test without a reason. That insurance won't pay for it. Like knowing I'm on the right track for avoiding heart disease and diabetes isn't a "reason"? I didn't argue with her. I simply said I didn't care if they paid for it or not.

That's an example of why I'm a cynic. And that sort of thing won't get any better under health care "reform." People will keep on down the path to stents and insulin shots, which are very expensive, and the taxpayer will pay for it, all for want of a lousy feedback blood test to see if a lifestyle change is working or not.

End rant. <g>
