I used to think for years that a single payer system would make my life in practice easier -- better to deal with one set of bosses than with dozens, each with their books of stupid rules, lists of "approved" specialists and medications, and so forth. I have little respect and liking for "traditional" insurers.

Actually a doctor convinced me that single payer was the only solution. I come from a family of doctors and was raised with "soialized medicine is the end of the world as we know it". But as long as we have insurance provided as an employee benefit then I don't see any other solution that contains cost.

Moreover, as a citizen, I believe that the government would become hugely, obscenely big and intrusive.

Already is. There are certain things the government does very well.
