I disagree with a lot Sally Quinn said. First, Crowely acted appropriately arresting Gates. A police officer doesn't have the option of walking away when someone is angrily acting irrational in a tantrum mode. Also when it comes to race and religious differences total candor doesn't necessarily help and thinking with your head is usually better than communicating negative gut feelings if you are trying to reach a consensus.
