I thought colonoscopies did an excellent job of that, that by getting them on schedule you were virtually assured of dodging that particular bullet. No?

I think they are, too. But large numbers of people will not get them. If it were more like stopping by for a mammogram or x-ray, you'd have many, many more people getting them.

I think with a bit more work the virtual colonoscopy could advance to this point. If they were as easy as getting a chest x-ray you'd have a lot more people doing it.

I think the GI docs believe the traditional colonoscopy is better because you can get the polyps removed in the same procedure -- but if the point is to get more people screened, the virtual colonoscopy offers great potential. As it stands now, the VC is probably not much of an improvement to the average patient. But I suspect it can be eventually improved to a point where it is more like just getting a CT of the abdomen or something (I would think the evolution of the imaging software would eliminate the requirement for injecting air into the colon in a VC over time).
