Geo-politics usually is rather "short sighted". We wanted to beat the Russians so we weren't particularly worried about the folks we were helping to do it. SAME thing with Iraq. Bush wanted to get Saddam out but he wasn't into "deep thinking" about what the ultimate consequences of a Shiite takeover would be. We may have spent a trillion bucks and many lives to eliminate our best BUFFER against Iran and create Iran's ONLY ally in the Middle East. If I were an Iranian looking to dominate the Middle East I'd be EXTREMELY happy with the efforts of the U.S....
