Number 69 with 14 Wins and 4 Majors To Go ...

... to end all doubts.

On Sunday Eldridge 'Tiger' Woods recorded his 69th PGA Tour Win. He now trails just Jack Nicklaus (73 wins) and Slammin'Sam Snead (82 wins). He reached PGA win number 69 at the age of 33, almost seven years faster than Nicklaus and eight years sooner than Snead. With his 4th PGA Tour Win of the year he moved into first place in the FedEx Cup standings and padded his lead on the money list with another $918,000 after tying Vijay Singh’s record of three Buick Open titles. Dating back to the 2006 British Open, Woods has won 21 of 39 starts on the PGA Tour. He'll have one remaining shot at an elusive 2009 Major when he tees up for the PGA at Hazeltine in Chaska, MN (10 miles from my former corporate campus) in 10 days. In the Majors race Tiger needs 4 more wins to take out the Bears record of 18 Major championships. Jack thinks Tiger will pass his record in the next 3 years. Until he does it, Jack's still the greatest in my book.

<< Very classy, Eric. >>

It was (the "release" of) a shot heard round the world. It's already been reported by over a dozen news journals. I missed it (other than in replay). T'was worth a giggle though.

<< "America's Pastime" (past tense) >>

"Football explains America because the game is about teamwork and camaraderie, competition and passion, strategy and energy, strength and emotion. You can look at football and see the heart of America." - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell -

"Just as America declared its independence from England, so American footballers redesigned the game and made it independent from the British import, rugby. And just as immigrants to the U.S. helped build the country, so various ethnic groups helped build football." - ESPN's Sal Paolantonio -

Baseball is almost as boring as Cricket ("whose games can last 5 days without yielding a result," Kumar), although Fenway Park and Wrigley Field (and the rooftops across) are great places to eat hot dogs and sip cold beer on warm summer evenings when there's nothing better to do.

My personal Mt. Rushmore of American Sports with credit to our northern counterparts:

Jimmy Brown (edging out runner-up Terry Bradshaw by considerable margin), U. San Fran's own Bill Russell, Bobby Orr (narrowly edging out Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, and Rocket Richard despite his too short career), and Jack Nicklaus (cause he was a fine hoopster, and footballer, not just a golfer). If there was room for a 5th, Rocky Marciano hands down even though the younger Sugar Ray (Leonard not Robinson) was a personal favorite on style, and if a 6th I guess I'd have to debate between Boston's Splendid Splinter with his USMC interrupted career, San Fran's Say Hey Kid, and Jackie Robinson of America's Former Favorite Pastime fame. None of them were boring.

<< If the season ended right now, the Giant's would face the Phillies in the playoffs. >>

The season has a bit (too much) to go, but should the Phils face the Giants come September or so, we'll have to fashion an appropriate wager.
